Lawmaker: Hang Up And Pump Your Gas Or Pay Fine
State Sen. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, wants drivers to hang-up their cell phones when they fill up their cars, reports Channel 5 News. She said warnings on gas pumps say using a cell phone could cause an electrical discharge that might ignite gas fumes. "The legislature's Judiciary Committee heard testimony Monday on her bill that would impose a $250 fine on people who use their cellular phones while pumping gas". Her proposal now awaits action in the state Senate Judiciary Committee." It's interesting that a bill would actually be considered when reported incidents are widely credited as being urban legends. But mobile phone manufacturers have warned consumers in the past against using the devices near gas pumps, cf an excerpt from a Motorola brochure and an article in CNN on Exxon's sending out a written warning to it's 8'500 gas stations in 1999. The official stand though is that it's not dangerous. According to Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association's Statement on the Alleged Dangers of Cell Phone Use at Gas Stations, "wireless phones at gas stations have not been scientifically or technically proven as potential danger at gas stations. |
