Campus cell phones can be irritants
FresnoBee looks at how mobile phones have become so common that students and faculty recognize them as part of the college scene.. "They connect students more easily than ever but may also disconnect them from what goes on around them. [...] Professor Donald Priest, chairman of the mass communication and journalism department, is 59, so he remembers well the day of college campuses without these phones. "The weirdest thing for me is that as soon as they walk out of the classroom, they have their phones," he says. "And I mean right away." Beyond questions of academic integrity and common courtesy, Priest finds the broader social phenomenon intriguing. "You walk around campus, and you're listening to snatches of people's personal conversation. I don't even want to know about this stuff. Or people walk around talking into a little headset. It almost seems like they are talking to themselves. "I was thinking about it this morning. They will interrupt you at any point. There is no privacy. It is another societal mind-set, and the kids think nothing of it." |
