Cell phones jammed at Bush inauguration?
U.S. President George Bush arrived for his second inaugural address Thursday as military bands played and dignitaries arrived for the ceremony, reports CTV. More than half a million people are gathered in Washington in near-freezing temperatures to witness the swearing-in. Unprecedented security "At $40 million US, it will be the most expensive -- and heavily-guarded -- inauguration in history. "There are 13,000 security personnel that we know of. There's anti-aircraft batteries hidden behind trees, combat air patrols by F-18s and F-16s over the city, they're even jamming cell phones because they have been used by terrorists to set off bombs before." As well, manholes have been welded shut, traffic has been barred from a 100-block area and various barriers restrict pedestrians from some areas. And from the skies, satellites that can read a car's licence plate will watch over Washington. None of this is in response to a specific threat but rather an attempt to be prepared for anything". |
