Athens poses a test for a wireless world

Never before will so many people have brought so many mobile phones to such a limited space. People are more dependent than ever on wireless devices to stay in touch, arrange meeting places, find hotels or check schedules, reports ECT News Network.

"The Athens Olympics will attract about five million over 17 days, compared with 1.2 million over 23 days in Lisbon causing some to question the ability of cellular networks in Greece to handle the unprecedented volume.

Cosmote said it was working in close cooperation with Vodafone Greece and TIM in Greece, as well as mobile operators outside the country, to ensure a smooth flow of mobile traffic and said it anticipated no problems.

It has invested more than 50 million, or $62 million, to upgrade its mobile phone infrastructure in Athens, the surrounding Attica region and the five other Olympic cities in time for the Games.

Within the Olympic stadium, the Cosmote network capacity will be increased as much as 15-fold, the company said. Five new base station control centers, a mobile telephony center and a GPRS customer service center are also being added."
