Texting for the older generation

"Throughout June and July the Mobile Data Association (MDA) and Shearings Holidays have been hosting a series of drop in text messaging workshops and special promotion days for the 50+ age group at Wyevale Garden Centres, reports Cellular News.

"The events are proving to be a huge success, Swindon being the busiest so far with 200 visitors. Experts have been answering queries, teaching people how to text and providing guidance on using handsets at home and abroad, now that the holiday season is upon us".

In a related article, the BBC today reports on a class in Glasgow, at Strathclyde University's Senior Studies Institute, on the various uses of a mobile phone for mature students (50+) given by four "phone trainers" from the mobile phone company Orange.

"As well as text message lessons, attendees were also taught how to download mobile pictures and ringtones. Students were also shown how to send pictures as text messages to friends and family on the day.

The two-hour class, originally planned as a one-off pilot, was said to be so successful that plans are already under way for more. "
