China's Mobile-Phone Market Feels Strain From Competition
Competition is so fierce that Chinese phone companies are establishing VIP clubs for their favorite, high-end users. Perks include gold-plated membership cards, special airport lounges and programs that dole out airline frequent-flier miles for consumers who spend a lot of time talking on their phones, reports the WSJ "But for China's big phone companies, most of which are listed on U.S. stock markets, "that puts pressure on margins, operators will have to offer [even] more to lure in subscribers." Another problem, according to the report: Most people in China who don't yet have mobile phones are far less wealthy than those who do. That means the revenue generated from those people won't be as great, and phone companies will have to fight even harder to make money." |
