Texting can be bulimia aid

It may be more commonly used to vote on television show or make plans with friends, but text-messaging is increasingly being employed in health problems, according to The New Zealand Herald.

"Auckland University researchers have studied text messages as a way to help people give up smoking. Now a German study is trialling text-messaging with people suffering the eating disorder bulimia nervosa.

The use of technology such as email, computer programmes and text messages was in the early stages, but appeared to be useful in helping people with eating disorders.

Often people who suffered from bulimia experienced guilt and shame. Many are secretive about their condition and reluctant to seek help. Text messaging is private and could be used to provide advice and alternatives, enhancing treatments with face-to-face therapy and medication.

Early results from a German pilot study using text messages with patients after they had been discharged from inpatient psychotherapy, show text-messaging was well accepted and gave support to bulimic patients".
