Crossed signals over jail mobile phone jamming

The New South Wales Government has accused the Federal Government of blocking a trial of mobile phone jamming in the State's jails, reports ABC.net.au.

"State prison authorities are currently prevented from applying for, or installing new jamming technology.

State Justice Minister John Hatzistergos wants a trial of new technology at Lithgow jail, saying it is a serious security issue.

"The fact is that the nature of the prisoners we are getting in the system are certainly much more dangerous than we've ever experienced in the past," he said.

The State Government also announced new penalties for people smuggling phones into jails".
