Cell phone makers connect for recycling program
The cell phone industry on Wednesday is expected to announce its biggest recycling initiative — a move environmentalists say is an inadequate response to a growing problem, according to USA Today. "AT&T Wireless, Motorola, Nokia, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and a handful of others have signed up for the program, "Wireless: The New Recyclable." USA Today goes on with some tips on where to return old phones: -- The new CTIA Web site, recyclewirelessphones.com, can help you locate a place to return old phones. Donate them to charity. Several charities will take used phones and give them to groups in need. Donate a Phone, for one, gives phones to shelters for battered women so they can make calls in an emergency. For a different take on recycling programs, read Elisa Batista's article of July in Wired, Recycling Program a Tough Cell, in an investigative article, denouncing cell-phone "recycling programs", where customers are urged to "do their fair share for the environment" by recycling their old cell phones. When in fact, the used handsets are being sold to Third World countries -- for a profit. |
