Trade Union organizes campaign to ward off layoffs

Sanlam Life, the life assurance subsidiary of South African financial services group Sanlam Ltd, confirmed on Monday that about 350 people would lose their jobs as part of the group's restructuring process, reports the Mail and Guardian Online.

The company's retrenchment plans have been characterised as "racially motivated" by Solidarity trade union members, targeting white staff members in the restructuring process.

Solidarity will attempt to mobilise the Afrikaans community to force Sanlam to cancel "their racially motivated plans" with an overall media campaign including text messaging. Sanlam denies the layoffs have any racial basis.
