Texting messaging an relationships: Study

Text messaging is often the start of beautiful friendships, according to new research by Macquarie University psychology professor, Kipling Williams.

"As a relationship develops, the ritual of exchanging text becomes a sign of intimacy and commitment. The study found many people treated text messages as small treasures and refused to delete them from their phone after they were read.

But SMS is also being used to end relationships or avoid other face-to-face confrontations. With some people using SMS as a way to end relationships, cancel dates or avoid fear of rejection when asking someone out".

The study, commissioned by mobile phone carrier Vodafone Australia, also found text messages on mobile phones were an entrenched part of teenage culture that helped foster adolescent relationships, reports Herald Sun.
