U.S. Wireless Market
Christine Nuzum for the WSJ, analyzes the U.S. wireless market, where Americans have stepped up their purchases of new cellphone subscriptions. The top four U.S. carriers had a combined net gain of 2.54 million customers during the second quarter, 40% more than the net gain a year ago, and the strongest quarterly gain in over a year. In terms of who's calling, this caught my eye: "According to consulting firm Telephia, the industry didn't add a disproportionate number of young subscribers during the second quarter. Surprisingly, it's elderly subscribers that seem to be signing up faster. Cellphone users over the age of 56 jumped by 11% from the second quarter of 2002 to the second quarter of 2003. Analysts didn't know how to explain that trend, which could reflect merely the aging of baby-boomer cellphone users rather than new adherents in the senior crowd". |
