UK Student Unions offer lecture alerts, exam updates by SMS
A new student SMS information service has been implemented at 50 Universities and Colleges across the UK. Students can now recieve lecture alerts, exam updates and promotions offered though their union by subscribing to the Unions SMS service. The idea of using TXT as a method of informing students of Union promotions and events in real-time came to the founder of Head Porter Ltd, Dr Simon Strojan, while he was events organiser of his college at the University of Cambridge. After completing his degree he joined a leading new media firm, where he met others who saw the potential in a service that could instantly inform students across the UK on lifestyle, academic and career information. The service that has been developed provides students with complete control to select electronic vouchers via text and email on any thing from food to drink, nightclubs to travel. Students have an online tool to select and de select whatever interests them and therefore have complete control over how many Union and Commercial messages they receive. The service operates on the basis of a revenue split, passing on a large percentage of income from campaigns to the under funded Student Unions and thus serves as a method of generating income for both the company and its University Union members.
